St. Paul’s University (SPU) is celebrating a major triumph in student innovation after Alvin Macharia, an SPU student and innovator at the university’s Innovation and Incubation Hub (iPARK), clinched the 1st Runner-Up position at the prestigious Q-Solve Kenya Hackathon 2026.

The high-stakes event, hosted at Strathmore University in Nairobi from September 1 to 3, 2026, brought together brilliant university minds, researchers, and young technology enthusiasts from across the region to build quantum-inspired solutions for real-world challenges.

Harnessing Frontier Technology to Fight Financial Fraud

Alvin, alongside his interdisciplinary team, impressed a panel of judges, industry mentors, and quantum experts with their creation: a Quantum-Enhanced Fraud Detection Application.

Financial fraud continues to pose a massive threat to East Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy and fintech ecosystem. Standard classical algorithms often struggle with the complexity, volume, and real-time processing needed to catch dynamic fraud patterns. Alvin’s team tackled this gap by leveraging quantum machine learning and advanced simulation algorithms to detect anomalies, analyze threat patterns, and minimize fraudulent transactions with higher accuracy and reduced processing times.

The innovation directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) under the hackathon's Fintech & Financial Inclusion track.

Celebrating Innovation at SPU’s iPARK

Alvin’s success at Q-Solve 2026 underscores the role of St. Paul’s University’s iPARK—the institution’s center for incubation, research, and youth entrepreneurship—in nurturing student talent. Through iPARK, students receive mentorship, technical guidance, and the dynamic environment needed to convert abstract concepts into scalable technology solutions.

About the Q-Solve Kenya Hackathon

The Q-Solve Kenya Hackathon 2026 was co-hosted by Strathmore University and the University of Nairobi, supported by global tech leaders including Microsoft and the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) at CERN. The 3-day build sprint brought together selected student innovators across East Africa to develop early-stage prototypes addressing key sustainable development goals in agriculture, healthcare, and financial services.

Designed to foster transparency, competitive sourcing, and strong strategic partnerships, this process enables the University to update its database of registered suppliers across various goods, services, and works categories. Interested firms are encouraged to submit their details through our digital portal to be considered for current and upcoming procurement opportunities.

St. Paul’s University has taken another significant step towards strengthening the credibility and global recognition of university qualifications in Kenya following its official registration as a Qualification Awarding Body (QAB) by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA)

This landmark milestone was highlighted on September 1, 2026, during a high-level KNQA consultative engagement held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). The meeting brought together key leaders across the education sector, including Vice-Chancellors, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Principals, and representatives from universities nationwide. Senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the Commission for University Education (CUE), the TVET Authority (TVETA), the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), and KICD were also in attendance.

Representing SPU at the event were Dr. Petronnila Otuya, Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences, and Mr. George Gachuru, Director of TVET. They formally received the University’s QAB Registration Certificate from Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Higher Education and Research.

Strengthening Quality and Public Trust

During the event, KNQA commended St. Paul's University alongside other pioneering institutions for completing the registration process. The Authority emphasized that QAB registration serves to complement—rather than replace—sector-based accreditation frameworks, creating an added layer of quality assurance.

Central to this initiative is the National Qualifications Database (NQD), which will provide:

• A trusted national record for seamless verification of qualifications.
• Enhanced learner mobility across national and international institutions.
• Data-driven insights for nationwide education and skills planning.
• Increased public confidence in Kenya's overall qualifications system.
