St. Paul’s University Secures Major Grants for Youth Innovation and Global Climate Action

St. Paul’s University has secured two new major grant projects designed to drive youth-led innovation, scholarly research, cross-continental dialogue, and climate action.

1. Spiritual Capital and Youth Innovation in an Age of Economic Anxiety

Funded by the Templeton Religion Trust (Grant Number TRT-2025-35778) and administered by St. Paul's University, this project investigates how faith and spiritual capital serve as catalysts for economic resilience and social entrepreneurship among the youth.

  • Project Leader: Rev. Dr. Kevin M. Ndereba (Director, Directorate of Research and Innovation)

  • Budget Amount: $100,000

  • Timeline: August 2026 – August 2028

  • Key Activities: Funding postgraduate research dissertations and theses, delivering sub-granted mini-projects, hosting clergy and policy workshops, organizing youth innovation hackathons, and publishing peer-reviewed research.

2. Virtual Intercultural Exchange for a Better Environment 2 (VIBE 2)

Funded by the European Union (Project Number 101336631), VIBE 2 is an international virtual exchange program designed to connect 2,500 Higher Education students (aged 18–30) across Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa to collaborate on climate change solutions.

  • Project Leaders: Prof. Abraham K. Waithima, PhD, CPM, FCS (DVC-Academic Affairs) and Grace Kinyanjui (Director, Virtual Campus)

  • Budget Amount: €499,972

  • Participating Partner Countries: Belgium, Greece, Italy, Spain, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Uganda

Project Objectives:

  • Foster intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding across continents.

  • Expand participants' climate change knowledge and media literacy skills.

  • Build practical digital skills among participating students.

  • Embed Virtual Exchange (VE) methodologies into the academic curricula of partner Higher Education Institutions.

  • Encourage long-term youth engagement in local and global environmental action.
