Honoring a Legacy: St. Paul’s University Bids Farewell to Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo

In a somber yet celebratory atmosphere at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, the St. Paul’s University (SPU) community gathered to pay their final respects to the late Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo.

Led by the University Chancellor, Hon. Margaret Kobia, Ph.D, EGH, the congregation—comprising staff, students, and alumni—eulogized a man whose life was a masterclass in servant leadership and academic excellence.

A Pillar of Governance and Transformation

During his tenure at the helm of SPU, Prof. Kombo was instrumental in shaping the institution we see today. Chancellor Margaret Kobia remembered him as a "decorated servant leader" and a "top-notch academician." His leadership was characterized by:

  • Strengthened Institutional Governance: Implementing structures that ensured long-term stability.

  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlining university processes to better serve the student body.

  • Transformational Vision: Inspiring those around him to strive for higher standards in both faith and academia.

"A Lasting Impact"

The Requiem Mass was filled with moving tributes. Prof. Esther Mombo highlighted the spiritual dimension of his leadership, noting that his guidance left an indelible mark on the hearts of the university community.

Beyond the titles and academic accolades, the late Professor was celebrated for his core values:

  • Humility: Despite his high office, he remained accessible to all.

  • Prudence: His wise stewardship guided the university through complex seasons.

  • Devotion: An unwavering love for God and a commitment to serving the Church and the Academy simultaneously.

A Word of Comfort

The Council Chair, His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit, delivered the sermon, offering words of hope and reflection to the grieving family and the SPU fraternity. He reminded the congregants of the profound impact a life lived in diligent service to God can have on the world.

"Prof. Kombo will be remembered for his humility, his prudence, and his love for God, whom he served diligently."

Final Farewell

As the St. Paul’s University community, we mourn the loss of a giant, but we also celebrate the rich legacy he leaves behind. His contributions to theology, leadership, and education will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
