SPU School of Theology Hosts 8th Pan-African Congress on Pastoral Care and Counselling

The St. Paul's University community, through the School of Theology, is honoured to officially welcome all participants to the 8th Pan-African Congress of The African Association for Pastoral Studies and Counselling (AAPSC). This significant four-day congress running from Tuesday, November 11th, to Friday, November 14th, 2025, at our main campus in Limuru.

We are thrilled to host this gathering, which has drawn distinguished scholars, pastoral caregivers, counsellors, and clergy from across the African continent. This event marks a special homecoming for the association, which was originally founded in Limuru, Kenya, in 1985.

The theme for this 8th Congress is "Healing Together: Pastoral Care in a Fractured, Traumatized World."

Under the leadership of its president, Prof. Vhumani Magezi, the AAPSC aims to educate, equip, and empower individuals and institutions by promoting pastoral care and counselling from a distinctively African perspective.

This week, delegates will present papers and engage in critical dialogue on the congress theme, focusing on several key subthemes:

  • Public Care for Healing: Re-imagining pastoral care as a public force for societal healing.

  • Collective Healing: Exploring new strategies for collaboration in fractured communities.

  • Fractured and Broken: How we perceive and engage with others from a perspective of brokenness.

  • Abuse of Power: Developing pastoral responses to international, continental, and local abuses of power.

  • Reparation, Reconciliation, and Justice: Examining the difficult pathways to restoring social realities and relationships.

  • Intergenerational Trauma: Addressing past and current trauma to break the cycle for future generations.

  • Pastoral Care and Economy: Responding to the economic challenges and opportunities facing ministries in Africa.

St. Paul's University warmly welcomes all our guests and anticipates a week of fruitful discussion, academic enrichment, and strengthened partnerships aimed at fostering healing and justice across the continent.
