A wise man once stated that failure to plan is planning to fail. Since inception, St. Paul’s University has lived up to this and with a host of Strategic Plan experts, formulation of feasible plans would not be an uphill task! The tremendous growth witnessed in the recent past are a testament to formulation and implementation of visionary ideas that defied turbulent seasons in higher education. The award of Charter in 2007 saw formulation of a the first Strategic that was essential in setting up a foundation for the university we celebrate today. The ten-year plan ushered in the 2016-2025 that clearly gave direction on institution’s growth not only in students and staff population but also spiritual formation, programmes offered, infrastructure, collaboration just to mention a few. Elapsing of the validity period paved way for the 2025 2023 edition dubbed “Building Resilience through Innovation and Digitalization.”
On July 22, 2025, St. Paul’s University officially unveiled its Strategic Plan 2025-2030 at the university premises in Limuru campus. The five-year plan presented by the leadership seeks to reposition the university and respond to the fast-evolving higher education landscape. The plan outlines a bold and transformative road-map to enhance student experience, academic excellence, and institutional growth. Rooted in the University's vision and mission, this plan is designed to position St. Paul’s University as a leading institution in developing, "Transformative Servant Leaders through Innovative Teaching, Learning, Research, and Spiritual Formation."
In his speech, Prof. Mike Kuria, Commission Secretary and CEO Commission for University Education (CUE), the Chief Guest during the launch applauded the leadership for designing the plan noting it is a product of deep reflection, rigorous analysis, and broad-based consultation. Prof. Kuria noted the transformative role the plan will contribute in shaping Kenya’s education sector to meet national development goals. Prof. Kuria underscored the importance of Competency-Based Education (CBE) in preparing graduates for the modern day job market, a key feature of the Strategic Plan.
Mrs. Elizabeth Wambui Mbugua, a Council Member representing the University Council Chair His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit noted that strategic planning is a useful tool for improving efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery. It ensures institutions define their strategic directions and make informed and appropriate decisions regarding infrastructure development, human resource and financial allocation. “This Strategic Plan will act as a very important tool for monitoring and evaluating the aspirations of the university, “stated Mrs. Wambui.
Vice-Chancellor Rev. Canon Prof. James Kombo shared that as the university collectively looks to the next five years and beyond, it cannot afford to ignore the reality of the 21st century digital, dynamic and unpredictable world. “Our response to today’s challenges and opportunities lies in embracing digitalization and innovation at every level of our operations, an area that the Strategic Plan addresses boldly,” affirmed Prof. Kombo. The plan prioritizes investments in technology and creative thinking ensuring that St. Paul’s University remains a leader in providing relevant education and solutions. From leveraging data to improve decision-making, to encouraging entrepreneurial mindsets in students, to building cutting-edge research capabilities, the plan will ensure the university stays ahead of the curve in equipping graduates to thrive in this evolving global context.
Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academics Prof. Abraham Waithima stated that the Plan is committed to the effective implementation and delivery of STEM programmes to equip students with practical, industry-aligned skills. Prof. Waithima added, “In the near future, we will be launching Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery, Bachelors of Pharmacy and Bachelors of Law. Further, the university will unveil a world-class innovation and entrepreneurship park that will become a centre of excellence in the region.”
On the other hand, Dr. Mwirigi Kiula, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance and Administration indicated that the Plans commitment in accelerating innovation, digitalization by leveraging technology will enhance operational efficiency and modernize teaching, research and administration, expanding digital learning platforms and automation of university processes.
The St. Paul’s University Strategic Plan (2025-2030) is anchored on five pillars: Promotion of customer attraction, development, digitization, and retention, enhancing of financial sustainability and resource mobilization, optimizing operational efficiency, digitization, and infrastructure development, strengthen ecumenism, ethical leadership, institutional capacity, and performance culture, and fortify ethical leadership and governance for posterity.
