In the global Church, women are a huge demographic in the life of the Church in terms of numbers, spiritual care, and leadership. Much of women's contributions are never made explicit. Prof. Mombo has made it her life's work to center the voices and impact of women in the Church and society at large.
The University of Edinburgh, School of Divinity has honored our very own Professor of Theology, Prof. Esther Mombo by inviting her to give the prestigious Cunningham Lecture on 29th November 2023. Her Lecture is titled The God of Mama Rabecca Jumba: African Women as Forerunners in Re-imagining Christianities. Prof. Mombo will focus on the diverse "herstories", focusing on the contribution of Mama Rabecca, a Church leader of the African Israel Nineveh Church (Kenya) between 1974-1983, and how she is an example of women's agency in translating theology in the everyday lives of people despite the challenges of patriarchy, neo-colonialism, and racism.

Professor Esther Mombo teaches church history and theologies from women’s perspectives and interfaith courses and writes on women’s issues, evangelism, HIV/AIDS, Christian-Muslim relations, and poverty in Africa. She works closely with the Programme for Christian and Muslim Relations in Africa and is a member of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians. Her areas of service include networking among Christian and Muslim women leaders on issues of Dialogue. She has previously served on the Inter-Anglican Doctrinal and Theological Commission. Mombo earned her B.D. from St. Paul's United Theological College, M.Phil. from Trinity College Dublin, and Ph.D. at Edinburgh University. |
