Out of the Box: Rethinking Africa Security Conference

Stability, national cohesion, and peaceful coexistence among communities and nations across the globe cannot be overlooked owing to the consequences of their absence: curtailed movements, collapsed economies, women and children being stripped off their dignity, and starvation just to mention a few.

Anchored on the university's Mission for producing graduates for global service, St. Paul's University in partnership with Union Panaficaine de Batisseurs de Paix, Pax Christi International and Peace Tree Network, convened a conference dubbed "Out of the Box: Rethinking Africa Security" on Tuesday 15th October 2024 at the main Main campus in Limuru. The conference brought together intellectuals both in academia and the corporate world drawn from many nations, who engaged in a fruitful discourse on maters Peace and Security. "Africa being the cradle of man and St. Paul's being one of the oldest university's in the continent, where else would such a forum be held if not SPU", highlighted Rev. Truphosa Sumba, Ag. Vice Chancellor, St. Paul's University while delivering her welcoming remarks.

The conference was graced by six keynote speakers: Mr. Hubert Heindl - Pilot Task Force RAS in Germany, Balagizi Gonzague-Patrick - Deputy Ambassador African Union, GreatLakes from Burundi, Fr. Dr. Mbila – Director, AU Chaplaincy from Ethiopia, Prof. Marti Waals - Professor of Theology, Human Rights Activist from Belgium, Prof. Macharia Munene - Security Specialist, USIU from Kenya, and Prof. Esther Mombo - Professor of Theology, St. Paul’s University from Kenya.

Each of the speakers demystified the state of Security in Africa was from a different perspective infusing a fresh aura into the participants minds that provoked fresh thoughts into the mater and subsequent implementation of keys lessons drawn from the forum. Mr. Heindl kicked off the dicussions with a presentation themed "To Scare War Away: The Scenario Process in SnD Germany – Mechanisms and Assimilation in Africa". He was succeeded by Ambassador Balagizi and Fr. Dr. Mbila who spoke on "I Have a Dream – How to Boot AU Vision to Effective Impact: The Role of Ethics and Discernment".
