With the constant changes in technology and the rise of citizen journalism, the line between those professionally trained and self-made journalists is becoming increasingly blurred. However, the enormous growth in the media industry means that there is an immense need for well trained professionals to work in the various sections. The Diploma in Journalism Programme aims at introducing the student to the general principles of communication before delving into the various aspects of journalism. The programme is designed to introduce the student to journalism concepts while at the same time exploring the practical aspects of the course. The programme is geared towards producing a professional who can work either as a reporter, presenter, producer, editor among other positions. The course seeks to help the student appreciate the place of Christian values and ethics to a journalist working in today‘s society.

Admission requirements

  • A minimum KCSE grade C- with a C in English OR 
  • O Level division III with a minimum of 38 points with 6 credits, one of which must be either in English Language or Literature in English. OR 
  • A‘ Level with 2 principal passes. OR 
  • D+ in KCSE with additional one-year certificate or above from a college OR 
  • Equivalents to the above qualifications as determined by St. Paul‘s University Senate.

Duration of the Programme
The duration of the course is three (3) semesters of 675 contact hours (45 hours per subject x 5 subjects per semester x 3 semesters)

3 Objectives of the Diploma in Journalism
The objectives of the programme is to enable the student understand the journalism field and acquire the skills and competencies required of a journalist. The course also aims at enabling the student to comprehend the challenges facing today‘s journalism professional and learn how to surmount these challenges. A graduate of the programme should not only qualify to study for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Communication, but in the interim should be able to practice as a journalist.
