Introduction

Global trends and increasing awareness in human rights, including the enactment of the new constitution in Kenya requires a comprehensive understanding of basic human rights and enhanced inclusiveness, including the rights of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. This programme contributes to special needs education and development in this respect. A Bachelor of Education (Special Needs) degree is a good beginning for a career in teaching more so as schools become more inclusive.

Individuals trained in Education with special needs will be able to work in public and private institutions of learning. Graduates can also pursue further studies and courses and advance to become supervisors or administrators or instructors in colleges that prepare others to teach special education.

The Bachelor of Education (Special Needs) degree will produce teachers of high integrity and enable them to participate in the educational transformation process for individuals with special needs thereby contribute to nation building.

Program Objective

The goals of the programme are to enable the graduates to:

  • Enhance early identification and placement of learners with special needs and disabilities in order to increase equity and inclusiveness.
  • Use acquired skills to promote quality, relevant and holistic education in learning institutions for learners with special needs in Education.
  • Support research and development in special needs education, documentation and dissemination of relevant information.

KCSE grade C+ with C+ in English or its equivalents, Or

Introduction

The Bachelor of Education Degree in Early Childhood Education is designed for teachers, supervisors and managers of early childhood development program. It is an intervention program aimed at equipping the teacher with knowledge, skills and positive attitude towards promoting holistic development of the child's as means to realization of the childs full potential in all aspects.

Learners will be trained to apply knowledge of child growth and development in a pre-school setting to start up academic, pastoral and growth monitoring and promotion programs that support the child's holistic development.

Program Objective

To produce professionally qualified teachers, supervisors and pre-school managers who will be able to understand the growth and developmental stages of the child so as to promote development of his/her personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to his/her fullest potential.

Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology

Introduction

The Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology (BACP) programme introduces students to the core areas of Psychology, by exposing them to broad based academic and experiential exposure to the science of behavior that guides the work of Counseling Psychologists.

Course Objectives

  • To impart knowledge, skills and values, through training Counseling psychologists who will be able to develop the necessary competencies to meet the growing needs of the society.
  • To prepare future generations for social, economic, religious and political responsibilities in a fluid society by inculcating values, emotional dispositions and behavior patterns that enhance their daily living.
  • To assist students in developing a base and working knowledge of application of psychological, developmental and mental health principles in a psychology related practicum experience in the final year.
  • To enable students leverage the principles and tenets of behavioral science and go on to work in a wide range of careers involving the rendering of therapeutic services to a variety of people at different levels after completing the dynamic core and elective courses.

Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies

Introduction

The Bachelor of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies is an inter-disciplinary program designed to provide students with knowledge of peace and conflict as this relates to personal, local, national, regional and global perspectives.

Peace and Conflict Studies is part and parcel of international relations, with a focus on human relations. In this program, students are introduced to cutting-edge courses that explore the causes and consequences of war and armed conflict, with a view to understanding how to achieve sustainable peace. Courses draw on perspectives from political science, international relations, ethics, psychology and conflict resolution, allowing students to engage critically with the social, political and economic issues associated with peace and conflict in Africa and beyond.

Program Objective

The program assists students to become effective citizens and leaders in a peaceful and democratic society, both as individuals and as makers and implementers of private and public policy. It equips students with skills in peace and conflict as well as knowledge in mechanisms, techniques and strategies of mediation, negotiation and arbitration.
